S. health officials have found that some patients have been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction after taking their chances of getting a drug for erectile problems. The drugs, including Viagra, are used to treat erectile dysfunction.
In the last three months, the FDA has detected 22 million prescriptions for Viagra, the first time it has detected a problem. A similar number of Viagra prescriptions were filled in 2003, according to the drug’s website.
The drug, known generically as sildenafil citrate, is FDA-approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation. It is used in more than 150 countries. The drug, which is sold in 25,000, is intended for men who have difficulty getting or maintaining an erection during sex. The drug is not available as an over-the-counter drug.
Viagra, a generic drug, has been linked to up to 1.5 million cases of pulmonary hypertension. Doctors often prescribe Viagra to treat high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol or diabetes. The FDA has not linked Viagra to the death of a patient who had a heart attack during the drug’s use.
Viagra is available only with a prescription, said Dr. David Graham of the Cleveland Clinic, who was not involved in the study.
But Graham said it is important for patients to know that the drugs they take may not work for everyone. And many of the Viagra prescriptions are for long-term use.
“It’s not an easy thing to do when you take a drug that’s supposed to help a patient with erectile dysfunction,” Graham said.
But doctors who prescribe Viagra sometimes prescribe it to treat other medical conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes. In some cases, doctors may prescribe Viagra to treat other conditions that are not listed on the drug’s list.
“It’s very common for people to take a drug for a condition, and that doesn’t happen well.”
Dr. Richard M. Weisz, a Cleveland Clinic spokesman, said the drug is only available for long-term use. He added that Viagra was first approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in 1998.
Viagra is not approved for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension. It was first approved for use in 2002 by the Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA has not linked Viagra to a death. In 2004, the agency conducted an investigation and found that Viagra did not increase a patient’s risk of dying from the drug.
However, the FDA has linked the drug to pulmonary hypertension.
“Physicians are not trained to talk about a drug’s effects on a patient, and there are other conditions that can cause a patient to be in an unsafe situation,” Graham said.
Graham said the FDA is also working with other health care providers to better understand the possible link between drugs and deaths.
He said the drug’s manufacturer, Merck, has been working with the FDA to develop a product for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. That drug, known generically as sildenafil, is the only drug available that can be used to treat the condition.
Weisz said he expects the FDA will eventually approve Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction. It is not known whether Viagra will be marketed as a treatment for pulmonary hypertension.
“I don’t see it that way at all,” Weisz said.
The FDA has not identified the drug’s active ingredient.
Graham said the drug is not used by men who are unable to get or keep an erection. The drug has been linked to more than 1,000 deaths. The FDA has also not identified other potential causes for a patient’s death.
Graham said the FDA has already started talking to other health care providers about the possibility of prescribing Viagra.
He said there is good evidence that the drug can be used to treat pulmonary hypertension.
“When it was approved to treat erectile dysfunction, people were going to be shocked and very upset by this,” Graham said.
He added that some men have taken the drug to treat low blood pressure. Graham, who was not involved in the study, said the drugs are used to treat high blood pressure.
“There is a lot of uncertainty and uncertainty about the safety of drugs,” Graham said.
